Photocopied portion of letter, Katharine T. Obear, to Horace F.W. Gibbes, re her memories of General William T. Sherman's march through Winsboro, S.C., "the house was set on fire three times" while sheltering nineteen women and children. Obear includes anecdote about a young woman from Columbia, S.C., who sang a Confederate song on the piazza to taunt Union troops; her defiance was answered by a rock thrown through the window; includes annotations added, 1975.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829.
